Some Interesting Facts About Cuba

From time to time I like to learn new things about different countries of the world. This week I’ve learned about Republic of Cuba.

I feel attracted to this country since I first hear about Cuba, long time ago. There is something about this country and it’s people that made me feel vibrant. Don’t know exactly what…

The Republic of Cuba has an estimated population of 11,061,886 and a surface of 110,860 sq km. It is an island located between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean.

What I found quite surprising is that it has a death rate of 7.52 deaths/1,000 population. Compared to other countries in the world, which ranks 114 among the countries with the highest mortality. And this is quite good, as most of the “civilized countries” have a much greater death rate (USA rank 84, United Kingdom rank 60, Germany rank 37).

Being number one in this top it’s not the best thing. South Africa ranks the first with 17.23 deaths to each 1,000 population.

On the infant mortality rate Cuba also ranks well, on 182 place with only 4.83 deaths/1000 live births. It overtakes – by overtake I mean has a lower mortality, not higher – USA (173), Greece (179) and Canada (181) and it’s right bellow New Zealand (183).

Something tells me that Cuba it’s quite a great place to live!

Another fact that surprised me is their expenditures on health and education. Health expenditures represent 10,6% of their GDP (Gross Domestic Product), which rank Cuba on number 24 worldwide. The physicians density is 6.399 physicians/1,000 population (based on 2007 data), much higher than USA (2.672/1000).

Education expenditures are 12.9% of GDP (2010), which rank Cuba number 2 in the world (!!!).

By the way, Cuba’s GDP is ranked 68 world wide, with $114.1 billion in 2010 (Purchasing Power Parity).

I believe much of this is due to the communist government that is more deeply committed to socialism than other parties.

Cuba has a great music. The idea about researching on Cuba got to me after listening to some Cuban music. I will definitely want to spend some time in Cuba in the near future, as it has great beaches, great music and great cuisine.

If you’ve been to Cuba or you live there, we will like to know your opinion about. You may place your comments bellow.

Here is some Cuban music for you to listen:
